A couple of years ago we adopted a cat who had been in a shelter for seven years. It took a long time to warm up to us, but she is now part of the family, incorporated in a codicil to our wills.

Now it turns out that Trump’s vice president running mate, who calls himself JP Vance, says the US is being run by “childless cat ladies.” This isn’t the only gaffe Vance has made, but 46.5 million households in the United States own cats, making them the second most popular pet after dogs. This is according to the February, 2024 APPA National Pet Owners Survey. 65.1 million households in the United States owned at least one dog.

There has been immediate reaction from people who normally are not political, like Jennifer Anniston, who has 50 million followers on Instagram and is beloved especially by her generation. Millions of Taylor Swift fans rise to her defense. I noted previously that merely one Swifty, commenting on Taylor’s Instagram and X accounts, could pass this on to convince 360 million followers to register as Democrats to support the narrative. Makes me wonder whether the first US citizen to lead a country, Golda Meir was a cat lady? Whether Indira Ghandi, Maggie Thatcher, Angela Merkel et al were “cat women”? If so, was that a factor in their appeal?

In the first 48 hours after the changing of the guard, roughly 38,000 people, mostly Gen Z registered to vote. Harris may be in a honeymoon period, but she is rising in the polls and the polls do not include these new voters.
